Pet owners in the San Francisco area have been relying on Balboa Pet Hospital for comprehensive pet healthcare services since 1948. Dr. Paul D. Clary and his wife, Alice began the Clary family's history in this Outer Richmond neighborhood in 1966, when they purchased the San Francisco veterinary hospital from Drs. Fried and Chafets. Dr. Clary and Alice worked together to create a well respected hospital with a welcoming atmosphere that puts pets and their families at ease as soon as they enter the reception area. Many of our clients came here with their parents as children or grandchildren!
Dr. Clary, who grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin and Petaluma, California, became a veterinarian partly because of something his father, a chemist, said: “If I had to do it all over again, I'd be a veterinarian.” After starting his post-secondary education at Santa Rosa Junior College, he went on to earn a certificate in Animal Husbandry and then a Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Science at the University of California at Davis. He stayed at UC Davis for his veterinary school training and earned a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1963. He was an active member and the past president of the San Francisco Veterinary Medical Association and proudly held memberships in the American Veterinary Medical Association, California Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Animal Hospital Association.
But these credentials only give a glimpse into the man. He is remembered with respect by all who knew him: clients, colleagues, and employees alike. His clients and patients remember his empathy, compassion and the time he was willing to devote to their needs. He was veterinarian and friend to many of our clients. He built a cart for a paralyzed patient, before you could buy them commercially. One client tells of the time he took time out to come over and take one last stroll around the block with them and their beloved retriever. He valued his client's time and always wore a wrist watch, determined not to keep a client waiting unless there was a real emergency. He took the time to explain to children of clients what was happening with their pets. He was a teacher in this way, drawing diagrams to help explain. He was life long learner and an avid reader of veterinary textbooks and journals. He used this knowledge to perform a multitude of intricate surgeries, back in the days before veterinary specialists. While he did the "doctoring", Alice ran the business. She also pinch hit for veterinary assistants now and then!
Every thing Dr. Clary did, he did well. He also loved ranching, scuba diving, motorcycles, old cars, FLYING. Above all, he loved his wife Alice with whom he shared 55 years of marriage, followed by their children and grandchildren and, of course his cat Pete, and his dog, Fathom. Retirement was appealing, but it meant careful planning.
Under his watchful eye, as he moved into retirement, Balboa Pet Hospital moved into a new era. He and Alice worked to build an exceptional team of experienced veterinarians and a caring, professional hospital staff. Sadly, Dr. Clary passed away in 2011, but his wife Alice remains the owner of the hospital and active in all management decisions. Her focus continues to be providing client centered service, clean comfortable surroundings and the best possible care, whether it’s a wellness exam or major surgery. Many of the Clary children and grandchildren are (or have been) part of the team. Starting out as Kennel Attendants or Reception Assistants, they all grew up proud to be part of Balboa Pet Hospital's history.
We pledge to treat YOU, our clients and patients, as Dr. Clary did. We will continue to nurture and support your relationship with your pet by providing quality health care services, pet care education and counseling, and our best efforts to keep your companion happy and healthy for a long time.
